There are certain peculiarities when it comes to learning a new language. Different areas have different dialects and different idioms. For example, in Europe, you go to hospital, but in America you go to the hospital. Researchers created an online quiz to gather data about different dialects of english. The quiz is able to predict where you are from based on the grammar you use.

If you want to be truly fluent in a language you need to be born in and immersed in the language. Your ability to learn a language is at its peak when you are young, specifically ten and younger. Your ability to learn grammar shuts down after you turn 18. This may be because that is the age when people are adults and take on more responsibilities. Adults do not have as much time to study and learn.

The New College Group says that English rules can be tricky. These rules would be known as synonyms, idioms, and pronunciation are what make it difficult to learn. The first example is with words containing “ie” and “ei”. The rule is that you use “I before E, except after C.” Another example is when a word ends in “ough” such as tough and rough. Although these two words sound the same, other words like through are pronounced “throo.” There are many other rules that are difficult such as slang, that really don’t have a meaning or make sense if you know or understand another language. McConnell clearly states that language learning is a part of the brain chemistry for children. Their unconscious state of mind is designed to absorb information, making it easier for young children to learn a second language. In learning a language, there is a critical period where children are able to learn quicker and more naturally than adults. In particular, this is the grammar aspect of learning a language. This is at its peak during childhood and quickly declines during adolescence. There is no clear marking for the amount of time that the critical period is important. It is also unknown what causes this critical period and the decline in new language learning that occurs afterwards.

Another difficulty in learning a new language is the speed with which native speakers typically communicate. In an article that The Atlantic wrote, they did research on 12 students. He looked at how quickly they were talking and also the effort in which they were speaking as well. They came to a conclusion that most languages are transmitting the same information at the same rate. Not only is this not their first language, but english as a second language will still seem fast which ultimately makes it harder for them to communicate effectively.

Learning English can pose as a barrier to immigrants receiving jobs they are completely qualified for. Fields that have a high number of immigrant workers include, accounting, nursing, education, law and engineering. In a survey conducted by the city of Lincoln’s New Americans Task Force, 52% of respondents said they can’t always pay their monthly expenses. 20% reported housing being unsafe and uncomfortable.
